At Portswood, reading lies at the heart of everything we do.

Our aim:

To foster confident, competent and happy readers who actively engage with reading and see it as an important life skill.

This is a key thread that runs throughout our reading curriculum.

Reading is incredibly important for young minds.

It helps children to;

develop their imagination

expand their vocabulary

improve their understanding of the world around them.

Through reading, children explore new ideas, learn about different cultures, and enhance their critical thinking skills. Plus, it's a fun way to discover exciting stories and adventures!

Encouraging a love for reading from an early age sets the foundation for lifelong learning and success

At Portswood, we approach the teaching of reading through four key strands

Early Reading and Phonics

Guided Reading

Whole Class Reading (Y2 ownards)

Class Novel

We actively promote and support home reading. We encourage children to read with an adult daily to enhance their reading skills and foster a lifelong love for books.

To celebrate a love of reading we make use of a well-stocked school library and hold special events.
